Between March 12 and April 3, 2014, Carrell sexually abused a 5-year-old special needs girl on his bus. The abuse was captured on security footage, showing him lingering over the girl as he unbuckled her seat belt and bringing her to the front of the bus to sit on his lap. He was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. The Canyons School District settled a lawsuit with the victim’s family in June 2016, agreeing to pay $175,000. The district was criticized for failing to regularly review bus security footage, which could have detected the abuse earlier.
