In April 2020, Deputy John Matthews arrested Jere Meddaugh after a physical altercation during a late-night encounter. Meddaugh alleged false arrest and excessive force, claiming Matthews lacked reasonable suspicion for the stop and used unnecessary force. The court granted summary judgment in favor of Matthews on the false arrest claim but allowed the excessive force claim to proceed to trial.
