Former Deputy John Sanzone was charged with grand theft by embezzlement in August 2022. He allegedly arrested a homeless man in August 2022 and kept $3,500 intended for dental work instead of booking it into evidence. Sanzone was placed on administrative leave in September 2022 and subsequently released from employment. He was also mentioned in a federal lawsuit alleging mishandling of rape evidence and theft of $1,300 during an arrest in 2021 while with the Oroville Police Department.
