Former Major John Savaiko filed a lawsuit against the City of Miramar, alleging that he was passed over for promotion to Assistant Chief in favor of a Black outsider, Leonard Burgess, as part of a diversity initiative. Savaiko claimed he was demoted to Sergeant, lost his take-home car and management benefits, and was reassigned to a remote location after filing a discrimination charge. The city settled the lawsuit in 2022, paying Savaiko $150,000 without admitting liability.
