In April 2007, Jailer Kevin Blake Robinson was involved in the incarceration of Mitchell Vinson Harper, who was arrested for failing to appear in court on public intoxication charges. Harper, an alcoholic, experienced severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms while in the Lawrence County Jail, including hallucinations and incoherence. Despite these symptoms, Robinson and other jail staff failed to provide appropriate medical care. Harper died in custody on April 28, 2007, due to complications related to alcohol withdrawal. A lawsuit was filed against Robinson and others for deliberate indifference to Harper’s serious medical needs, alleging violations of the Fourteenth and Eighth Amendments. The case highlighted significant lapses in the duty of care owed to inmates experiencing medical emergencies.
