In 2018, Deputy Sheriff Kevin Deeren was found to have failed to disclose a 2007 arrest for criminal sexual assault during his 2015 hiring process. The charges had been dropped and the record expunged, but Deeren’s omission led to an internal investigation. During the investigation, Deeren refused to answer questions about the arrest, resulting in charges of dishonesty and insubordination. Sheriff Richard Anderson recommended his termination, but the Personnel and Bargaining Committee rejected this recommendation, concluding there was no just cause for termination. Deeren subsequently resigned and filed a lawsuit alleging First Amendment retaliation, which was dismissed by the court.
