On June 21, 2021, Officer Kraig Brownlow fatally shot Johnny Hurley, a civilian who had intervened to stop an active shooter in Olde Town Arvada. Brownlow mistook Hurley for the shooter and fired without issuing a warning. A lawsuit filed by Hurley’s family alleges that Brownlow’s actions were unreasonable and violated Hurley’s constitutional rights. Brownlow resigned from the department in good standing after the incident.
