In March 2019, Officer Kyle Smith was involved in the death of Roy Anthony Scott, a 65-year-old man with paranoid schizophrenia. Scott called 911 to report suspicious individuals, but no one was found. During the encounter, officers handcuffed Scott and restrained him on the ground. Scott became unresponsive and later died. His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the department and Smith, alleging excessive force and failure to provide timely medical assistance.
