In 2017, Lt. Alan Schrimpf, along with other officers, allowed an impaired driver, Kenneth Kennedy, to continue driving despite clear signs of intoxication. This decision led to a fatal head-on collision that killed three people. Schrimpf was aware of Kennedy’s intoxication and intent to consume more drugs, yet explicitly told Kennedy he could continue using drugs if he wished. Schrimpf’s actions were cited in a lawsuit alleging deliberate indifference to public safety.
