Former Sergeant Matthew August was charged with grand theft for falsifying overtime records, receiving over $68,000 in compensation for overtime he did not work between February 25, 2017, and October 19, 2018. The Irvine Police Department discovered these irregularities in June 2018, leading to an administrative investigation and subsequent criminal charges filed on October 15, 2019. August was employed by the department from November 2005 until his resignation on August 12, 2019.
