In 2011, Sergeant Hayes, along with two other officers, unlawfully detained and threatened the owner of a limousine company in Buxton. They accused the owner of theft without proper investigation, handcuffed him, and pressured him to return money. This misconduct led to a federal lawsuit in 2017, resulting in an out-of-court settlement. In 2021, the Maine Criminal Justice Academy revoked Hayes’ law enforcement license for official repression and other violations.
