In February 2015, Officer Michael Rapiejko used his patrol car to intentionally strike Mario Valencia, an armed suspect who had fired a rifle into the air and threatened suicide. The incident, captured on dashcam, led to Valencia filing an $850,000 claim against the town of Marana, alleging excessive force and resulting injuries including a skull fracture and cognitive impairments. Prior to this, in 2005, while serving with the NYPD, Rapiejko was accused of excessive force in an incident involving Luis Colon, leading to a $20,000 settlement. Rapiejko resigned from the Marana Police Department to pursue a law degree.
