On April 27, 2009, Officer Smith was involved in the handling of an inmate who exhibited signs of acute methamphetamine intoxication. Despite observing the inmate’s deteriorating condition, including incoherence and inability to maintain balance, the response was delayed. The inmate was eventually transported to the hospital but was pronounced dead on April 28, 2009. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as acute methamphetamine intoxication. A lawsuit was filed alleging negligence in the inmate’s care and delayed medical attention.
