Officer Thomas Shoemaker – Akron Police Department

In January 2024, Officer Shoemaker was involved in an incident where he body-slammed a woman during a family dispute, an action deemed ‘not objectively reasonable’ by the city’s independent police auditor. Despite recommendations for disciplinary action, the police chief found his actions justified. Additionally, in 2022, during protests over the death of Jayland Walker, Shoemaker was recorded repeatedly punching a protester, leading to a federal lawsuit against the city and several officers, including Shoemaker. The city settled the lawsuit for $747,000 in early 2024.
