In October 2023, former Assistant Sheriff Thomas filed a lawsuit against Sheriff Susan Hutson, alleging wrongful termination in retaliation for raising concerns about nepotism and misuse of public funds. Thomas claimed she was fired after warning Hutson about ethical issues, including the hiring of a senior staff member’s son as a contractor, which was deemed a prohibited contract by the ethics administration.
