Peter Newton – Addison County Sheriff’s Office

In June 2022, while serving as Addison County Sheriff, Peter Newton was charged with two counts of sexual assault, one count of domestic violence, and one count of unlawful restraint. These charges stemmed from a reported domestic disturbance at his Middlebury home in February 2022. Newton pleaded not guilty but faced calls for his resignation from state lawmakers and the governor. He did not seek re-election in November 2022, and his trial is pending.
