Former Addison County Sheriff Peter Newton was charged in June 2022 with two counts of sexual assault, one count of domestic violence, and one count of unlawful restraint. The charges stemmed from incidents in February 2022, where Newton allegedly sexually assaulted and unlawfully restrained a woman. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. Despite calls for his resignation, including from state lawmakers and the governor, Newton completed his term but did not seek re-election. His trial has faced delays, with the latest postponement in March 2024 due to financial difficulties in retaining legal counsel.
