In November 2017, Sheriff Richard Anderson demoted Sergeant Kevin Deeren to patrol deputy after Deeren allowed a domestic violence suspect to continue working alongside the victim, violating a no-contact order. Anderson concluded that Deeren’s actions demonstrated poor judgment and created significant liability for the county. Deeren filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful demotion, but the court upheld Anderson’s decision, affirming the demotion was justified based on Deeren’s conduct.
