In January 2015, Officer Richard Scavone was involved in the arrest of Amanda Vizcarrondo-Ortiz on suspicion of littering and loitering. Body camera footage revealed that Scavone used excessive force during the arrest, including throwing Ortiz to the ground and grabbing her by the neck. The charges against Ortiz were dropped, and Scavone was fired from the department in September 2015. In January 2016, he was indicted on federal charges of excessive force and obstruction, facing up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
