Written by In December 2021, Officer Robert Hinkle fatally shot 29-year-old Quadry Sanders, an unarmed Black man, during an investigation into reports of a man waving a gun inside a home. Body camera footage showed Sanders appearing from around a refrigerator with his hands visible, holding a ball cap. Hinkle fired four times as Sanders raised his right hand above his head, then fired seven more times after Sanders fell to the ground. Hinkle was charged with first-degree manslaughter and subsequently fired. In June 2023, an arbitrator ordered his reinstatement, a decision the city is considering appealing. Sanders’ mother has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against Hinkle and the city.
