Former Chief Deputy Robert Sims was implicated in a lawsuit filed by former Sgt. Della Matheny in 2023, alleging harassment and creation of a hostile work environment under former Sheriff Steve Stephens. During the lawsuit, it was revealed that data from Sims’ county-issued cell phone was lost or destroyed, leading the court to grant an adverse jury instruction for discovery misconduct. The case was settled in March 2024, with Matheny reinstated as a sergeant and receiving $275,000.
