Officer Sam Bowen was terminated in October 2023 after an internal investigation revealed he used department-issued computers to send messages containing racial slurs, sexually explicit language, and derogatory comments about protected classes. Specific instances included referring to a colleague as a ‘Hannukah loving fag’ and making derogatory remarks about African Americans. Bowen filed a federal lawsuit alleging retaliation for his criticism of the police chief on Facebook, but the court ruled in favor of the city.
