Sergeant John Beswick – University of Alabama at Huntsville Police Department

In 2013, Sergeant Beswick handled a sexual assault case involving a student, Ms. Doe. He allegedly attempted to dissuade her from pursuing the case by stating that ‘people who hang out at the hockey dorms share girls all the time’ and that it was ‘completely normal and okay to have sex with someone that [Doe] didn’t know.’ After the accused confessed, Beswick reportedly told Ms. Doe that she had ‘no case at all.’ The case was closed without an arrest, and the accused was allowed to leave the country. These actions led to a lawsuit against the university for deliberate indifference to known sexual harassment. Why This Matters

By organizing this data, we can potentially demonstrate when officers were previously aware of laws they later claim ignorance of, challenging qualified immunity defenses and promoting accountability.
