Sgt. Joshua Lo – Mount Juliet Police Department

On November 2, 2022, Sgt. Joshua Lo fatally shot Eric Allen during a traffic stop. Allen, a passenger, moved to the driver’s seat and attempted to drive away while Sgt. Lo was leaning into the vehicle. Sgt. Lo deployed his taser and then fired his handgun multiple times, resulting in Allen’s death. A lawsuit filed by Allen’s family alleges that Sgt. Lo used ‘unnecessary, unreasonable, and excessive force’ in violation of Allen’s constitutional rights. The lawsuit seeks $50 million in damages and federal oversight of the Mt. Juliet Police Department’s use of force practices. A Wilson County grand jury declined to indict Sgt. Lo, and he returned to duty after a preliminary review. The incident has raised concerns about the department’s patrol tactics and their impact on Black Americans.
