In 2018, Sheriff Mazzola was accused by former Rangely Police Chief Vincent Wilczek and Officer Roy Kinney of interfering in an administrative investigation following the fatal shooting of Daniel Pierce. The officers alleged that Mazzola provided false character information about them, which they claimed led to their forced resignations. However, in October 2021, a federal judge dismissed their lawsuit, stating that the allegations did not plausibly claim a violation of their rights.
