In April 2020, Sheriff Will Montgomery was named as a defendant in a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by Kareem Martin. The lawsuit alleged violations of civil rights under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. The case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina under case number 0:2020cv01400.
