In 2021 and 2022, Assistant Deputy Superintendent of Jail Operations Thomas Brady had subordinate Sheriff’s Office maintenance employees perform free plumbing work at his private residence during and outside of their state work hours. The work included replacing a shower head, replacing his water heater, and repairing his boiler. Brady did not compensate the employees nor reimburse the Sheriff’s Office for the value of the state work time used. On one occasion, he gave each employee a bottle of wine instead of payment. The State Ethics Commission found reasonable cause to believe Brady violated conflict of interest laws and scheduled a public hearing within 90 days. Each violation could result in a civil penalty of up to $10,000.
