In November 2023, a $20 million lawsuit was filed alleging that a female inmate at the Jefferson County Jail was sexually abused by a male correctional officer in 2015. The lawsuit claims the officer fondled the inmate’s breasts and forcibly kissed her in her cell. The county denies the allegations, stating the officer resigned in 2017 after a complaint about unauthorized social contact with former female inmates.
